A hand-drawn animation commissioned for the BBC’s centenary programming about the Iolaire disaster, in which 201 sailors returning from WWI drowned just yards from home on New Year’s Eve. First-hand Scottish Gaelic accounts from survivors and witnesses describe the disaster and its lasting impact on the Lewis community, set to a powerful musical score by Sarah-Jane Summers. The animation is drawn in charcoal style and layered with poignant Iolaire-related photographic details. Director Catriona Black will attend the screening.

Director Biography

Catrìona Black uses archive material to tell Gaelic stories. Her first animation for BBC Alba, Pìobairean Bhòrnais (2003), was nominated for several awards, screened in over 50 cinemas, and distributed on DVD in North America by National Geographic. Calum Noah was also screened on BBC Alba and worldwide, as was Faodail, funded by National Geographic’s All Roads Film Fund. Catrìona was convener of the Scottish Animation Group, and on the animation award committees for BAFTA Scotland and Cineworks. She now lives in the Netherlands.
